BBC broadcast interrupted after presenter suffers heart problem live on air

He was presenting live on air yesterday when things took an unexpected turn

A BBC broadcast was interrupted suddenly when a presenter suffered a ‘heart problem’ live on air, with a colleague having to step in to continue the programme.

David Fitzgerald was hosting his morning show for BBC Radio Devon yesterday (Thursday 13 April) when things took an unexpected – and no doubt scary – turn.

His colleague Michael Chequer had to step in for the presenter, updating listeners to say that Fitzgerald had to ‘leave the studio’ to get checked out after feeling unwell.

Chequer said: “It is Thursday morning, Michael Chequer in for David Fitzgerald who is feeling a little under the weather.

"He has left the studio to get himself checked out.

“He is absolutely fine, we will keep you updated and let you know. He will be back with you ASAP."

Thankfully, Fitzgerald is now doing well and recovering at home, having reassured his fans on Facebook to explain what happened, confirming he had suffered a ‘heart issue’ while on radio.

Posting a photo of himself in a hospital bed, he wrote: "Just a little heart issue this morning, on the radio… thank you Derriford.”

A sign in the background of the photo said ‘ED Resus’, possibly to indicate the resuscitation area of an emergency department.

Thankfully, Fitzgerald was giving a happy smile to the camera, hopefully suggesting the worst was over.

Many of his fans wished him a ‘speedy recovery’, with one commenting: “So sorry to hear that take care of yourself get well soon.”

Fitzgerald shared an update with his fans on Facebook.

A third said: “Came as a surprise tuning into yesterday's golden hour & not hearing your dulcet tones. Wishing you a speedy recovery Fitz.”

A fourth added: “Just picked up on the news Fitz, every warm and best wish. You make my day on the morning show..not only a first rate presenter but also a Devon friend! You take care.”

A BBC spokesperson confirmed that Fitzgerald was doing well, adding that he is even planning to return to his radio show 'soon'.

A statement said: “Fitz is recovering well at home and is hoping to be back on air soon.”
