She wrote that she and her husband Dan Jewett, made the donations as a 'signal of trust and encouragement' to those and others who are sacrificing their own time in the name of creating a better life for others.

In the message, she said that the concentration of wealth among a small amount of people, saying that she and her husband enlisted the help of researchers to decide how to distribute the cash most effectively.

She wrote: "In this effort, we are governed by a humbling belief that it would be better if disproportionate wealth were not concentrated in a small number of hands and that the solutions are best designed and implemented by others."

The latest recipients include arts centres, universities and refugee resettlement groups, all of which have had lower levels of funding due to the pandemic.

Minority communities and non-profits also received substantial gifts.

She wrote: "These are people who have spent years successfully advancing humanitarian aims, often without knowing whether there will be any money in their bank accounts in two months. What do we think they might do with more cash on hand than they expected?

"Buy needed supplies. Find new creative ways to help. Hire a few extra team members they know they can pay for the next five years. Buy chairs for them. Stop having to work every weekend.

"Get some sleep."

She also said that those on the 'front lines of challenges' will know how best to use the money, saying they are encouraged to spend it however they choose.

Scott added: "Generosity is generative. Sharing makes more."

Back in April, Scott handed the president of a US tribal college $8 million (£5.8m) with absolutely no strings attached.

She wanted to help out the Turtle Mountain Community College in Belcourt, North Dakota - one of the first tribal colleges ever opened in the US - which has around 500 students, the majority of whom are from the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa.

In December 2020, she donated more than $4.1 billion (£3bn) to 384 food banks and charities.
