Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp has taken to social media to deny using a racial slur after a video resurfaced of him singing in the back of a car.

The 15-year-old actor also took the opportunity to apologise for replacing the n-word with 'neighbour', saying that it wasn't his place to replace the word.

The footage shows Noah, who plays Will Byers on the Netflix show, singing along to Chris Brown and Lil Dicky's 'Freaky Friday' in the back of a car with some friends.

Taking to Instagram, he said: "hi guys, recently a video from last summer has gotten out of me dancing and singing while singing the word 'neighbor' over the n-word.

"i would truly never say the n word and i'm not the type of person. i genuinely have never used that word in my life. using the word 'neighbor' in that song was just something my camp friends and i did.

"i hope you all understand i could never even think about doing that. my friends also would never post a video, or support me, if i was saying that slur without hesitation.

"i apologize for using a replacement word. it is not my place to use one and i should of kept my mouth shut. i understand why it is found offensive and i am so sorry."

Just weeks ago, the youngster explained how his Twitter account had been hacked after a series of inappropriate messaged had been posted.

His brief message read: "Someone hacked my twitter [sic.] it's not me i'm trying to get back and i'll let you know when i do ." He's also had his TikTok account delved into.

Speaking to Variety at the beginning of the month, he touched on his internet fame and how it's nice being recognised for his social media presence rather than being a kid out of Stranger Things.

He explained: "I love being online because I feel like you can just be yourself and it's so easy to open up. I just love social media because it's just on a screen with all these people.

"You don't see anyone so it's easy to open up and have fun and not worry about what other people think. TikTok especially is just so casual and very nonjudgmental."

Schnapp added: "It's one big inside joke and everyone understands it. It's crazy to see how everyone can collectively come together and agree and decide on doing things."
