Chippy's epic response to unhappy customer who felt they were ‘robbed’ of £17.50 dinner

A UK chippy has had an incredible response to an unhappy customer who moaned about the price of their sit-in meal, saying they felt ‘robbed’.

The last few years haven’t been kind to the nation’s economy, which has been battered by Brexit, the pandemic and more.

As a result, many people are feeling the pinch, with prices rising in various areas of day-to-day life, including pints, weekly shops and fuel.

And it seems the same applies to good ol’ fish and chips, an industry that has been hit by increases in everything from frying oil to cod and haddock.

Many chippies have inevitably had to make changes to deal with these ‘tough times’, but not all customers are happy.

Posting a two-star TripAdvisor review for their ‘expensive’ meal at Yorkshire Fisheries in Blackpool two weeks ago, one user wrote: "£17.50 for fish & chips to eat in. Was supposed to be a (whopping fish) just large really!

“Good quality, but hell, £17.50 for fish 'n' chips in out of season Blackpool chippy! I honestly feel I've been robbed."

But rather than taking the customer-is-always-right approach and offering them a freebie to say sorry, staff at the fish and chip shop decided to hit back to explain themselves, and their situation.

They said: "I’m sorry to read that you feel that you have been robbed.

“As you can appreciate the cost of everything has gone up considerably and although you feel that you paid too much, I would like to assure you and anyone else reading your review that our king size is filleted to double the weight of our standard size, which the majority of our customers find to be generous.

"As regards pricing ‘out of season’, our prices - just like our overheads, remain the same regardless of time of year.

“Like so many other businesses, we are determined to ride these tough times and continue to serve high quality fish and chips with the fantastic service which so many of our customers enjoy."

Another customer recently expressed their frustration of paying £20.30 for an extra large portion of fish and medium sized portion of chips, along with a bottle of cola – despite the ‘poor hungry student’ saying it was an ‘excellent meal’.

The chippy replied: “I am glad that you enjoyed your meal so much, and for future reference please note that we offer various portion sizes to suit every pocket and appetite.”

Many others have since left glowing reviews for the fish and chip shop, with a number saying they had gone for the slightly more wallet-friendly £13-sized meal.

One said: "Visited with my wife on 11th Feb. We both had the Haddock £13 special. Fish Chips Peas Bread & Butter Cup of Tea. We had the fish lightly battered just how we like it.

"The food was excellent and the staff very welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be coming here again next time we are in Blackpool. I highly recommend this restaurant."

Someone else also wrote: "Absolutely the best fish and chips I've ever had.

"I had the £13 special which consists of cod in batter with chips and a side, a slice of bread and butter and a drink included. All of which were of the best quality.

"The fish was almost meaty but flakey and the batter was very crispy and not saturated in grease. The chips were lovely and fluffy with a slight crunch."
