Brit caught with £15 million worth of drugs in US airport escapes 60-year-sentence

The Middlesbrough mum initially claimed she had done nothing wrong

A British woman who was caught with £15 million worth of drugs in a US airport has had her sentence confirmed.

Kim Hall, a 29-year-old from Middlesbrough, landed herself in trouble after allegedly transporting 43kg of cocaine from Mexico to Chicago in 2024, as she prepared to catch a connecting flight to London.

She claims that two men, who had paid for her holiday in Mexico, later held her at gunpoint and ordered her to transport the two suitcases through security, and she became another name on the increasing number of Brits who are facing drug smuggling charges abroad.

The mother maintains that she believed they will filled to the brim with money, as one of the men wanted to deliver the cash to a family member but had 'lost his passport'.

Appearing on ITV's This Morning to speak about the case, Hall explained: "It just seemed really legit and straightforward.

"I was going to go on a holiday, take a break and just do them a favour by bringing back this money to give to a member of their family.

"They just said that one of them had lost their passport and they were in trouble and needed to get some money home to their family."

Of course, when security at the O'Hare International Airport discovered what was truly inside the cases, the beautician was arrested and was told she could potentially spend 60 years behind bars, especially after she initially pled not guilty.

However, Hall soon saw sense and managed to strike a plea bargain deal with prosecutors, which saw a judge sentence her to just six years in prison after a court appearance yesterday (Monday 8 September).

Her lawyer Brandon Carter negotiated lower terms for Hall by arguing that the court had no interest in holding a foreign national behind bars for a period as extensive as 30 or 60 years.

He told ITV News: "She's not a citizen of the United States, let alone a local of Chicago, so we have no business really in keeping her here. Of course when you're facing 30 years, something that's less than that is going to be a godsend."

Her father John has also said they are over the moon with the reduced sentence, which could even see the Middlesbrough mum back in the UK in as little as two years depending on good behaviour and taking into account the time she has already spent in detention.

John told The Sun: "It’s better news than we could ever have hoped for. When we first heard talk of a plea deal we didn’t dare to hope.

"I couldn’t get the figure of 60 years out of my head and feared the worst. But instead of the worst case scenario we are now looking at just about the best we could have hoped for. Kimberley has suffered terribly through this ordeal through no fault of her own, we all have.

"It’s been a long, hard struggle financially and emotionally but we always had faith in her and always supported her. She is not a criminal and never has been.

"She is just a naïve young woman whose decision making was affected by her bipolar condition. Thankfully the courts recognised all of that and it means we will be getting her home much sooner than we have always feared."
