Beloved TV presenter dies in horrific fall after jumping from 3 storey apartment building trying to escape armed robbers

Nigerian police have launched an investigation into Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu's death

Nigerian TV presenter Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu tragically lost her life while trying to escape home invaders this week, police have said.

The 29-year-old lived in the capital city of Abuja, which is estimated to house around four million residents.

Authorities said Maduagwu 'jumped down' from her third-floor apartment as the armed assailants closed in on Monday (29 September).

Police discovered the media figure unconscious and immediately took her to Maitama District Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, said in a statement: "Regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident... some hoodlums, armed robbers, specifically gained access into Unique Apartment, where Sommie lives.

"It is a three-story twin building with 18 flats around the Gishiri axis of Katampe, under the Mabushi Divisional Area.

"At this point, two guards were on duty, security men."

He added: "Sommie actually occupied an apartment on the topmost floor of the building.

"And out of fear, she jumped down from that third storey, the top floor.

"It's so sad, so unfortunate."

Her employer, Arise News, announced the death of 'Sommie' on social media.

Arise's Hadiza Usman-Ajayi penned an official statement, which began: "It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.

"Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025 following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.

"Sommie, 29, was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers. Beyond the airwaves, Sommie was a lawyer who was a professional and supportive colleague and a friend to many."

It continued: "We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.

"Sommie's voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits."

A tribute video was later published by the channel itself, featuring members of the Arise News staff.

"We loved you here at Arise, I'm sure your family loved you," said one unnamed woman.

"Just have that in your heart wherever you are - it's all I feel like telling you, that you were loved. You were quiet, easygoing, I always admired you."

Elsewhere, Instagram users wanted to voice their own reactions to the tragedy.

One wrote: "Heartbreaking news."

Another added: "May her precious soul rest in perfect peace."

A third added: "Rest well Sommie, you were ready to serve your Nation... we are sorry this has happened."

The incident remains under investigation.
