As soon as dogs hear a sound at the door, they up and howling at the mystery visitor on the other side.

But while most pups will simply scurry into the hallway, bark for a bit and then let it go, one dog clearly got far too excited:

Locals in Fife, Scotland, could not believe what they were seeing when a fellow resident shared a snap of a dog with its head hanging out the front door on Croftangry Road in Kelty.

And by that I don't mean that the door was already ajar and the cheeky pooch poked its head through the gap. Oh no.

In the bizarre clip, the canine canine can be seen tearing a hole through the uPVC door, where the letterbox should have been, chomping away at it until it's able to get its head out.

A snap taken by a passer-by was later shared to the Fife Jammer Locations group on Facebook, someone joked: "Different kind of ring doorbells in Kelty."

The snap, which has been liked over 2,000 times since it was shared, left many wondering whether it was real or not.

One user said: "A walked past it going to the nursery was just sitting with its tongue out looking about."

Another said: "I wonder what I was hearing earlier. OMG!!!"

"Seen this n fried ma head this morning ..now av seen the vid it makes more sense...what a loopy dog n poor owner dealing wi that lol," put a third.

While another added: "Imagine phoning the council and saying, 'I need a new letterbox and half a door as my dog has gnawed its way out'."

Some believe the dog was stressed.

However, while many found the scene quite amusing, others said it was no laughing matter.

Some claimed that it was a sign the dog was distressed.

"Dogs do this cos they have anxiety," said one user. "My German shepherd come through two doors when my daughter was born. Had to take her with me anytime I left with the daughter.

"Dog trainer told me she wanted to protect the kid."

Agreeing, another commented: "Dunno y folk think this is funny. Poor dog obv stressed or bored."

"Hopefully the dog doesn’t hurt itself or others. Must be so stressed. Poor thing," added someone else.
