Man guilty of orchestrating Tupac murder made crucial mistake that led to his arrest
Tupac Shakur’s murder remained unsolved for nearly 30 years.
That was until one of the men prosecutors said was inside the Cadillac involved in the shooting helped build the case against himself.
Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis, 63, first described his involvement to investigators in 2008 under a proffer agreement that restricted how prosecutors could use those statements against him.
But that protection did not give Davis permanent immunity for everything he later chose to say publicly.

And he kept talking.
Davis discussed the killing in interviews and documentaries and, in 2019, published Compton Street Legend.
He repeatedly placed himself inside the Cadillac on 7 September, 1996, described the events leading to the shooting, and implicated his nephew Orlando Anderson as the gunman.
Those voluntary public statements became important evidence when prosecutors charged Davis with Tupac’s murder in 2023.
Prosecutors did not allege Davis fired the fatal shots; they argued that he participated in and helped facilitate the retaliatory attack.
At trial, the state presented roughly two dozen witnesses alongside years of Davis’s recorded statements.
His defense argued that Davis had exaggerated or fabricated his involvement for money and notoriety.
On Monday (31 August), a Las Vegas jury convicted Davis of first-degree murder after deliberating for less than three hours.
Prosecutor Binu Palal said in closing arguments that prosecutors should take Davis’ own words at face value.
For years, he argued, Davis had been telling people ‘that he is responsible for Tupac Shakur's murder’.
"He's the shot caller - in every instance in every iteration he's the leader of the South Side Crips," Palal told the jury.
"When you have the shot caller sitting shotgun when shots are fired, there's no doubt he's responsible."
Davis’ defence team, meanwhile, tried to persuade jurors that his comments were fiction and exaggerated to sell books and make money.
Judge Carli Kierny ordered Davis to be held without bail while he awaits sentencing on 13 October.
Davis raised his hand and said ‘Excuse me’, before asking for the return of jewellery, a phone and other belongings.
“And I would like to appeal this matter,” Davis told the judge.
Judge Kierny told him an appeal would come after sentencing.
Prosecutors also voluntarily dismissed an extra prison sentence related to gang activity after the verdict, citing logistical issues involving a witness.
That eliminated the need for jurors to consider an additional phase of the case.
