It’s Official: Mayochup Is Coming To The UK

Asking UK customers to vote on the condiment in a Twitter poll, Heinz said if it reached 50,000 votes in favour it would go ahead.

This may sound like a bold statement, but condiments are a big part of our lives. I mean, no bacon butty would be right without a blob of ketchup or brown sauce, and just imagine a hotdog without a zig-zag of mustard across the top... it's just not on. Plus, these days none of us could cope without our ultimate crux, sriracha, which now gets drizzled on anything and everything.

This means that when Heinz announced that it could be adding a new hybrid sauce to its range, the internet immediately went into overdrive.

The product is a lovechild between mayonnaise and ketchup, playfully named 'Mayochup', and has been available in some corners of the globe for some time now.

Heinz then put the vote to America, asking if they fancied the condiment in their stores. They did - which led the company to then turn to the UK.

Asking UK customers to vote on the condiment in a Twitter poll, Heinz said if it reached 50,000 votes in favour, it would be rolling it out across the pond.

Over 102,000 votes later, Heinz had its answer - with 57 percent of the vote being pro-Mayochup.

Martina Davis, senior brand manager for Heinz [Seriously] Good Mayonnaise, said: "There has been an overwhelming outpouring of intrigue and interest in Mayochup over the past few days. We have listened to everybody and will be bringing Heinz Mayochup to saucy fans in the UK in 2019.

"We have started looking at how we can bring the perfect recipe for Heinz Mayochup to the UK and will provide more details in the near future. Stay tuned!"

While the majority of the vote was in favour of the condiment, not everyone was completely sold on the idea - with many saying that it existed already in the form of 'Fancy Sauce', 'Fry Sauce' or, that prawn cocktail classic, Marie Rose sauce.

"This whole #Mayochupnonsense has got to stop," one person tweeted. "You're not clever or original Heinz, it's called Fry Sauce & it's been around for ages. If culturally appropriating a condiment was a real thing, you would be guilty of it."

Others said the naming was all off, preferring 'Tomayo'.

Someone else gave Heinz the ultimate burn, writing: "This is just as bad as putting pineapple on pizza."

Ouch. Harsh words.
