Close-up footage of tomahawk missile nailing shipping container is truly ridiculous

It was a bad day to be that particular shipping container

Incredible footage of the impact a tomahawk missile has on a shipping container set up as a target has to be seen to be believed.

If you've got a bunch of missiles lying around then you'll want to know if they actually work and what they'll do when they actually hit something.

When it comes to the tomahawk missile we now know exactly what that looks like, even if it did ruin the day for a couple of unsuspecting birds.

Don't worry, the birds were fine. They flew away unharmed.

The missile test was done as part of a demonstration of the capabilities of the F-18 Super Hornet fighter jet, and one of those tests was following in the wake of a tomahawk missile.

The missile itself was targeted at a shipping container, which had been set up in the middle of the sea and was about to have a really bad day.

Spare a thought for the poor birds who thought they'd found a nice solid spot to perch on when the missile slammed into the shipping container and punched right through.

On the bright side the shipping container now has much better ventilation.

They certainly would have got a rude awakening, though apparently were able to fly away without injury - which is nice.

People watching the test praised the 'incredible footage' and said it was 'awesome' to see how a missile could punch a massive hole through two layers of metal, though plenty were concerned about the fate of the birds.

Someone else said this was a 'guidance system test' where the missile's payload had been taken out to test accuracy (it helps to have a target you can shoot at multiple times), so there could have been an even bigger bang.
