People seriously divided as Google brings back the flip phone

It's clear people don't quite know what to make of the new Google Pixel Fold

People have been left seriously divided as Google brings back the flip phone.

The tech giant seems to be reviving one of the most notable parts of the early 2000s - and no it's not the Spice Girls or MSN drama but the iconic folding phones that once graced our skinny jeans.

While the Y2K nostalgia may be somewhat welcomed - it's clear some people are not happy with the price tag attached to the latest gizmo.

Long gone are the golden days of Motorola RAZR, Blackberry and Sony Ericsson flip phones as a new, modern contender joins the block.

Google has just announced its highly-anticipated folding phone given the grand title of 'The Pixel Fold'.

The piece of kit is the company's 'first foldable phone' and, whether open or closed, Google promises there are 'endless ways of having fun and getting things done'.

The company explains: "When closed, Pixel Fold has a familiar smartphone silhouette that fits in the palm of your hand and slides into your pocket.

"Flip it open to reveal a 7.6-inch screen with a thinner profile than any other foldable phone in the market."

While the new phone boasts a very slim figure, Google assures it 'didn’t compromise on form and function'.

The site notes: "Many of the Pixel components - from camera, battery, speakers and haptics technology - were cleverly redesigned to fit within the thin design."

According to Google, the 'custom-built hinge' only adds to that thinness.

In short, the Pixel Fold lets you do all the usual tasks you’d expect any other phone while simultaneously giving you all the benefits of a tablet.

Sounds like the best of both worlds right?

Well, half of the internet isn't convinced.

While some people are excited for the new release, with one Twitter user writing: "Finally. Been waiting too long for this," it's clear not everyone is on the same page.

A second pleaded: "I don't want any more folding phones can you all stop that PLEASE."

Many others seemed to be totally outraged by the price which will set you back a staggering £1,749.

One person tweeted: ">£1000 is out of my budget for a phone tbh."

"Almost two grand is ridiculous to pay for a phone," added a second, while a third declared: "No phone is worth that."

"Google's new folding phone looks pretty cool," admitted another, "but at $1,800, are you kidding me?"

A fifth penned: "Finally, for rich unmarried tech bros: Google Pixel Fold announced for $1,799 - it’s the company’s first folding phone."

Ouch.

"$1800 before tax in a recession? That’s bloody optimistic," hit out another.

One even tagged the OG folding phone - Nokia - before writing: "Remember the folding phones they made 20 years ago. Mine can still play snake."

Oddly - that doesn't surprise me given that those phones could probably withstand a nuclear blast.

Like it or lump it - it seems flip phones are making a comeback once again.
