Nutrition expert shares 50p hack to help cure your hangover faster

A hangover cure to remember

Tom Earnshaw

A nutritionist has opened up on the extremely cheap hack you can take advantage of to help cure your hangovers quick.

Most of us have been there after a few too many pints or getting a bit carried away with the Jägerbombs.

It feels so right at the time but my God, you don't half come to regret it when you wake up the morning after.

Banging headaches, the sweats, or feeling sick as sin. Sometimes all three if you really went all out.

The next thing is to try and cure the hangover as quick as possible. As much as you might want to wallow in self pity might and crawl up in to a ball under your duvet, there's a few things you can do that can speed up the time in which you should start feeling yourself again.

And one of the quirkier tricks is cheap as chips, costing literal pence.

Dorothy Woods, a nutritionist behind HealthyDot.com, spoke to experts at TOTUM to explain why it works and why you should try this cure - especially if you're feeling sick as a dog.

One of the worst parts of being hungover is having a bad stomach; it can put you off wanting to drink and eat, making your recovery time longer.

Fortunately, Dorothy has a great and easy suggestion on how to help and it's an essential to add to your fridge before going out boozing.

Dorothy says: “Ginger is one of the best at-home remedies to help with nausea.

"Brew a ginger tea or snack on crystallised ginger to help settle your stomach.”

Obviously, it comes in loads of different products, but ginger root can be as cheap at 50p in your local supermarket.

There's also ginger shots and ginger paste, with a crystallised version existing for baking purposes - or in this case, recovering from the ale quickly.

A 2014 study published in the Nutrition Journal looked at how ginger can help stop you feeling sick and even stop you vomiting. The study was to help the likes of pregnant women, those receiving cancer treatment, and those who suffer from motion sickness.

It is recommended that for a hangover, you should probably stick to ginger tea or the crystallised version.

You can make your own ginger tea by putting fresh ginger in a pot of water before boiling it and letting it simmer. Given you're feeling a little worse for wear, it might be worth adding some honey or lemon to lessen the ginger attack on your tastebuds, which can be pretty strong.

As well as ginger, Dorothy has offered other hangover remedies which includes replacing lost electrolytes.

She said: "Alcohol dehydrates you, so drink water before bed and make sure to stay hydrated the next day too. Coconut water or sports drinks can help replace lost electrolytes."

On getting your favourite hangover food the morning after, Dorothy says you should try your best to resist this and go for healthier options.

"Skip the greasy foods and instead choose a balanced breakfast with foods like eggs, bananas, and oatmeal," she says.

“Eggs are packed with cysteine, which can aid in breaking down toxins, while bananas are a great source of potassium, and oatmeal helps to provide steady energy. For a lighter option, a smoothie with berries and spinach will be full of antioxidants and easy on the stomach too."
