The almost 12-tonne ship was also loaded with 5,800 cattle when it disappeared after sending a distress signal during the typhoon, while it was making its way through the East China Sea.

It's thought that the missing vessel was hit by high waves and strong winds caused by Typhoon Maysak.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has said they are in contact with the families of the missing crew members on board.

"The Australian Government is providing consular assistance to the families of two Australian crew members on board a cargo vessel reported missing in Japanese waters," DFAT said in a statement.

"Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment."

High waves crashed ashore as Typhoon Maysak approached on Jeju Island, South Korea on Wednesday.

According to nine.com.au, one Filipino crew member was found alive in waters with a life jacket last night and he is in a stable condition.

The ship is en route to China after departing from Napier in New Zealand on August 14. It was expected to arrive in China on September 3.
