Several people are missing after two cargo ships have collided in the North Sea off the German coast, according to German authorities.

Germany’s Central Command for Maritime Emergencies claim that Bahamas cargo ship Polesie and British-flagged Verity collided today (24 October) in the early morning about 14 miles south-west of the island of Helgoland.

Authorities said British ship Verity apparently sank after the collision.

One person was rescued from the water as another person was receiving medical treatment.

Rescuers are now on the search for several more people.

Verity was travelling from Bremen, Germany, to the English port of Immingham.

Polesie remained afloat with 22 people on board.
