Members of the Australian Defence Force at the Northern Territory's Robertson Barracks have been banned from wearing offensive material.

An updated official guide on what they can and can't put on when not in uniform has been expanded to include products with the 'CU in the NT' slogan.

The very cheeky tourism slogan from the Northern Territory went viral when it first debuted in 2016.

However, the Defence Force is less inclined to see the funny side.

Department of Defence

According to The NT News, anything bearing the CU in the NT slogan - or anything from NT Unofficial - will be banned from the barracks because it's offensive.

The official statement is that the brand's 'material, behaviours or symbology' go against Defence values and behaviours.

This isn't anything new to the creators behind the tourism slogan, who have faced criticism in the past.

A formal statement was issued by the creators when it was claimed the CU in the NT slogan was negative towards women.

"The purpose of our slogan has always been to promote a quick and easy way to invite your friends to the Northern Territory," a formal statement read.

"It's a simple, easy to remember, cheerful way to invite your mates on holiday to the Territory.

"We've never said any bad words, only ever provided an invitation to the Northern Territory, one of the greatest places on Earth.

"If anyone is offended by our simple slogan, they might have trouble reading."
