Four people have been killed by a gunman armed with a rifle who walked into a hospital in the US and opened fire.

Police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, have confirmed the shooter has also died during the attack on St Francis Hospital.

Tulsa police confirmed the death toll in an online statement.

"We now have five dead, including the shooter, in the active shooter situation at the Natalie Building on the St. Francis Hospital Campus," Tulsa Police tweeted.

Speaking at a press conference, Deputy Police Chief Eric Dalgleish said said that police received a call about an active shooter at and arrived at the scene within three minutes of the call.

"The officers who did arrive did hear shots in the building and that's what directed them to the second floor," he said.

Tulsa police Captain Richard Meulenberg described the attack as a 'catastrophic scene', according to the ABC.

"One died after leaving the scene to try to get medical aid," he said. Meulenberg confirmed that police has received a call about a man with a rifle on the second floor of the medical building.

It then 'turned into an active shooter situation'.

Meulenberg told the ABC that by the time police arrived at the scene, 'they found a few people have been shot' including a few that had already died.

"We also found who we believed to be the shooter, and still believe to be the shooter, because he had a long rifle and a pistol with him."

White House officials revealed in a statement that US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the Tulsa shooting.

The Oklahoma shooting is the latest gun attack in the US to make headlines since the Uvalde school shooting in Texas.

Nineteen children and two teachers died in the Texas attack.

Ten days before the Uvalde shooting, a lone gunman opened fire in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people.

Recent shootings have now renewed a debate into US gun reform, with President Joe Biden recently calling on lawmakers to 'stand up to the gun lobby'.

"Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen? Where in God’s name is our backbone to have the courage to deal with and stand up to the lobbyists," Biden said after the Uvalde attack.

He added: "Why are we willing to keep living with this carnage? It is time to turn this pain into action. It's time to act."

Biden has previously called on Congress to take action on gun control legislation that would require universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons.
