Gold Coast Mayor Suggests This Year's Schoolies Could Take Place Over Zoom

Schoolies is an annual tradition that pretty much every school leaver in Australia enjoys and it's a treasured event for many.

Some like to head overseas for a week long party and others prefer to head up to the Gold Coast or Byron Bay to make loads of memories they'll forget the next day. But this year will be very different because of the coronavirus.

For the tens of thousands of people who would have been planning to flock to the Gold Coast, they face a nervous wait over whether the whole event could be cancelled. But the Mayor has an idea.

"You're the technology people. Maybe you use Zoom or whatever it is, social media, to do Schoolies like that from home."

Now that sounds lit.

Their website states 'at this stage it's business as usual for 2020 Schoolies' and that 'there are currently no restrictions that have been put in place by government over the dates of your holiday that will restrict you from celebrating Schoolies with your friends'.

People heading to clubs in Queensland are required to remain at their tables and dance while seated, so it'll be interesting to see how the Gold Coast will accomodate all those drunk teenagers.

The Sunshine State recorded no new coronavirus infections over the last 24 hours and if they keep that up then Schoolies might be allowed to proceed as normal. However, as we have seen elsewhere in Australia, things can change at the drop of a hat.
