Authorities have warned people in Far North Queensland to batten down the hatches ahead of a tropical cyclone making landfall.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has warned everyone living between Innisfail and Ingham to be 'listening to their radios' over the next few days for important updates.

She added the tropical cyclone is expected to land later tonight or tomorrow. While the matter is serious, there are plenty of people joking about the cyclone's name.

It just so happens that it's called Cyclone Kimi and everyone on social media is referencing the iconic Kath and Kim character.

One person wrote: "Everyone I hear 'Cyclone Kimi', a little voice inside my head says 'look at moi, look at moi'."

Hell, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service Twitter account even wrote: "Look at moi, Kimi, look at moi. @BOM_Qld has a feeling in their waters #CycloneKimi may cross the coast late today or early Tuesday. Where pacifically? Between Innisfail and Lucinda. Better get cracking on some of those important jobs of yours, like stocking your emergency kit."

Winds of up to 150km/h and torrential rain are expected when the weather system makes landfall and the Bureau of Meteorology is concerned there's 'considerable uncertainty' over where will be hit hardest.

"Tropical cyclone Kimi continues to move slowly southwards and is likely to get closer to the coast later today," the Bureau has advised.

"The system may intensify a little further to a category 2 system."

"Based on the current forecast track, the cyclone may cross the coast overnight or Tuesday between about Innisfail and Lucinda, however there remains considerable uncertainty with the crossing time and location."

While the cyclone is due to hit in the north, forecasters say parts of south-east and central Queensland will also feel the effects of Kimi.

The Bureau has added that there is a risk of flooding in this part of the state due to severe thunderstorms.

"The risk of severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding may continue overnight into early Tuesday morning about #SEQld," it wrote on Twitter.

Queensland Fire and Emergency has warned people not to attempt to drive through flooded roads as they are extremely unpredictable.

People in the region expected to be hit hard by the tropical cyclone have been told to have a plan in place now and get all their belongings inside to avoid damage.
