Victorian health authorities have announced 484 people have tested positive for coronavirus over the past 24 hours.

It's a new record for the biggest single-day jump in infections anywhere in the country since the pandemic began.

The previous record was set by Victoria only last week with 428 cases on Friday.

The number of new cases have regularly been in the triple digits over the past few weeks, despite parts of the state being plunged into fairly stringent lockdown.

People in the Melbourne metro and Mitchell Shire areas are only allowed to leave their homes for work and education, exercise, completely essential tasks, and care and compassionate reasons.

However, all this needs to be conducted in their local area to ensure people aren't travelling all across the lockdown zone.
