Woolworths and Coles are getting into the Christmas spirit by giving us delicious lobster at half price.

The delicious crustacean would usually cost a pretty penny to purchase, however, in the lead-up to the holidays, the retail giants will be selling Western Australian rock lobsters for just $20 each - a whopping 50 percent less than they were this time last year.

If you're worried about missing out, don't stress - Woolworths has apparently bought five times more lobsters than its usual supply in order to keep up with the anticipated demand.

But why exactly are lobsters suddenly far more affordable?

Well, according to Broadsheet, prices have dropped around the country 'because of an import ban on Australian live lobster by China, which used to take in more than 90 percent of the country's rock lobsters'.

Woolworths head of meat and seafood, Tim Dudding, agreed and added: "Lobsters have traditionally been considered a luxury item on the Christmas table, so we're pleased to be making them accessible to more families this year, while also supporting the local industry.

"Our support in purchasing more rock lobsters this year will give WA producers an avenue to move more volume into the domestic market which would have traditionally been exported.

"It's a win-win partnership, and we look forward to working with the industry to offer Australian households the chance to add premium seafood to their Christmas table this year at a more affordable price."

Amid growing tensions between China and Australia, Aussie agriculture minister David Littleproud told the ABC that seafood was simply sitting at Chinese ports after customs clearance delays due to increased inspections.

As a result, the hold-ups and ban have led to plunging domestic lobster prices.

"Just like all markets, supply and demand dictate price so there's quite a bit of product available," Erik Poole, supply and business development manager for Sydney Fish Market, told Broadsheet.

"We're not wanting to get too involved in the politics of it, but it's more about helping our primary producers."

The Western Rock Lobsters are available at Coles Delis nationwide from this weekend at an all-time low price of $20 each, while Woolies has the shellfish on sale now.
