Emergency services have provided an update following the death of Liam Payne.

The news broke this evening that the former member of One Direction had tragically died in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Citing emergency services, local reports stated the 31-year-old had been pronounced dead after having fallen from the third floor of the Hotel CasaSur hotel.

According to PA, Alberto Crescenti, the head of the state emergency medical system, said Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel had reported that Payne fell into the courtyard.

Local eye-witnesses claim to have seen the shocking incident, which happened at around 5pm local time.

Further details have since been confirmed about the singer's death, with Crescenti releasing a statement which revealed Payne had fallen around 40 metres and suffered 'severe injuries which were incompatible with life'.

"The alarm was raised at 5.04pm local time saying a person was lying in an internal patio at Casa Sur," he said.

"At 5.11pm an ambulance arrived and the man was certified dead.

"Afterwards we found out he had been a famous singer. Unfortunately the injuries he had suffered as a result of the fall proved to be fatal. There was no possibility of resuscitating him."

It is understood the star was in the city to attend a concert of his former bandmate Niall Horan.

Sky News reports that Pablo Policicchio, the spokesperson for the security ministry of Buenos Aires, has now claimed in a statement that Payne 'had thrown himself from the balcony of his room'.

Police, he said, had been sent to the hotel following reports of an 'aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol'.

Former X Factor duo Jedward wrote: "RIP Liam Payne. Condolences to friends and family."

Paris Hilton commented: So upsetting to hear the news of @LiamPayne passing. Sending love and condolences to his family & loved ones. RIP my friend."

Charlie Puth, who Payne worked with on the song Bedroom Floor, wrote on Instagram: "I am in shock right now.

"Liam was always so kind to me. He was one of the first major artists I got to work with. I cannot believe he is gone."

A statement on the official X account of the Brit Awards said: “We’re incredibly sad to learn of the tragic passing of Liam Payne. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this time”.

A large number of fans have now gathered outside the hotel to mark the popstar's death.

It was reported recently that Payne had been seen at Niall Horan's recent gig in the region.

Despite coming third in the series, they went on to become one of the biggest and most successful pop groups ever, releasing a number of hits, including 'What Makes You Beautiful' and 'Story of my Life'.

In 2017, Payne debuted his solo career with his hit track 'Strip That Down; featuring Quavo, going on to release his album LP1 two years later.

Earlier this year the singer released more new music in the form of his new single 'Teardrops'.
