Residents of Rotterdam are planning to throw rotten eggs at Jeff Bezos's super-yacht after it was reported that a historic bridge would need to be dismantled to get the ship out to the ocean.

The £400 million, 417-foot yacht - named the Y721 - is being built at the Oceano shipyard in Alblasserdam, in the Netherlands.

To get the boat out though, Bezos is footing the bill for the historic Koningshavenbrug bridge in Rotterdam, also known as De Hef, to be dismantled (temporarily).

After hearing the news, a Facebook event was set up which seems to be organising a gathering where people can throw eggs at the yacht as it passes in the summer.

The event has been organised by Pablo Strörmann and asks people to congregate on 1 June.

It reads: "Take a box of (rotten) eggs with you and let's throw them en masse at Jeff's superyacht when it sails through De Hef in Rotterdam.

"Rotterdam was built from the rubble by the people of Rotterdam, and we don't just take that apart for the phallus symbol of a megalomaniac billionaire. Not without a fight!"

At the time of writing this, there were 1,500 people that had chosen to attend with a further 5,800 'interested' in the get together.

Dutch publications reported that the local council had pledged never to dismantle the iconic bridge again after it was renovated in 2017 but Bezos' deep pockets might help sway that.

Speaking to Rijnmond project leader Marcel Walravens explained: “This mainly concerns the passage of a ship with high masts through De Hef.

“At the Koninginnebrug we can press a button and it opens. That is not possible here, because De Hef has a maximum height. The only alternative is to take out the middle part.”

But Ton Wesselink of the local history society Historisch Genootschap Roterodamum disagreed, saying: “Jobs are important, but there are limits with what you can and should do with our industrial heritage.”

There isn't much information available about the boat apart from the fact that it will have ‘three enormous masts and three decks’.

It’s being developed by custom yacht builder Oceano, and is believed to be based on the firm’s Black Pearl model - one of the largest and most ecological sailing yachts in the world.
