A mum discovered she is pregnant again hours after her husband died in a horrific accident involving one of their children.

Jonathan Rodriguez, 23, died from his injuries when one of his sons climbed into a truck and accidentally ran him over when he pulled a faulty gear shift, police said.

The freak accident happened while he was cleaning the yard at their home in Santaquin, Utah on 6 May at around 4.30pm local time by loading rocks into the bed of the truck.

The couple’s five-year-old son climbed into the truck’s cab and pulled the broken gear selector, which made the truck roll backwards despite the engine being turned off, police said.

Jonathan Rodriguez was killed in the freak accident.

The vehicle also hit Rodriguez’s mother Sonia, 47, as it went down a slope.

Despite efforts by emergency services to save the dad-of-two, Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.

His mother was rushed to hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.

One day after his death, Jonathan’s wife Daisy found out she was pregnant with the couple’s third child.

The family were unaware they were expecting a baby before the tragedy happened and have described the pregnancy as Rodriguez’s ‘final gift’ to his wife.

A GoFundMe page has been set-up to help the family and Rodriguez’s sister-in-law Sara Munoz paid tribute to the beloved dad, describing him as a man who had ‘a full life of dreams and goals ahead of him’.

Efforts to save Rodriguez were unsuccessful.

The tribute read: “My sister’s husband Jonathan Rodriguez alongside his mother Sonia Rodriguez tried to stop the vehicle from continuing to roll down the yard that sits on a slope.

"But unfortunately their efforts cost them to be crushed by the truck. Paramedics arrived and tried to resuscitate Jonathan, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His mother Sonia was life flighted to the hospital due to her extensive injuries and is currently awaiting multiple surgeries.”

The statement adds: “Jonathan was 23 years young with a full life of dreams and goals ahead of him. Those that knew Jonathan know that he was a great husband and an amazing father to his two boys.

"He worked hard to provide his family the beautiful life they had.

“His life was drastically cut short leaving behind his wife and his kids ages 3, 5. His own family has also suffered the loss of a son and a brother while awaiting news of his mother.”

In an update shared on 7 May, Munez explained that her sister was admitted to ER the previous night ‘due to some complications’ and discovered she is pregnant.
