Molly-Mae Criticised Over Comments About Wealth Inequality in Viral Resurfaced Video

The Love Island star was compared to Joe Rogan and Margaret Thatcher for her “tone deaf” comments on poverty in the viral video.

Molly-Mae Hague has been criticised over comments about wealth inequality and poverty in a viral resurfaced video on Twitter

The Love Island star, who is now a hugely successful Instagram influencer and Creative Director of PrettyLittleThing, made the “tone deaf” comments while she featured on PLT’s YouTube series The Diary of a CEO.

Although the interview titled “Molly-Mae: How She Became Creative Director Of PLT At 22” was first shared on the video streaming site on the 13th December, a clip went viral on Wednesday 5th January on Twitter.

In the clip, which was resurfaced by user @tsrbys shows the social media mogul explaining how she became so successful: “I just think you’re given one life, and it’s down to you what you do with it. You can literally go in any direction.”

She did acknowledge previous criticism for her privileged position, noting: “When I’ve spoken about that in the past I have been slammed a little bit, with people saying, ‘it’s easy for you to say that, you’ve not grown up in poverty, you’ve not grown up with major money struggles for you to sit there and say we all have the same 24 hours in a day. It’s not correct.’”

Molly-Mae continued: “But technically what I’m saying is correct, we do. So I understand obviously we all have different backgrounds and we’re all raised in different ways and we do have different financial situations but I think if you want something enough you can achieve it and it just depends what lengths you wanna go to get where you wanna be in the future.”

“I’ll go to any length,” she offers, “I’ve worked my absolute a** off to get where I am now.”

Social media users flocked to Twitter to share their distaste in Molly Mae’s comments. The account owner whose tweet of the TikTok clip went viral, captioning the video in jest with “If you’re homeless, just buy a house.”

One commenter shared the video on Twitter, writing: “I used to rate Molly Mae but she’s so tone deaf it’s disgusting.”

The user continued: “She grew up with two police officer parents lol. Try telling this to someone who’s disabled or who’s parents chose drugs over them or didn’t get to even eat a meal everyday unless they were at school” [sic].

Another Twitter fan compared the Love Island star to the controversial podcaster Joe Rogan, while another noted similarities between her and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The reality star announced her PrettyLittleThing nomination to become Creative Director last year, inciting criticism for her involvement with a brand deep-seated with fast fashion values.

The fashion line was also discovered by The Sunday Times last year to be paying garment workers in Leicester as little as £3.50 per hour following an investigation.
