Aussie Ski Season To Start Early Thanks To Huge Dumping Of Snow

Up to 60 centimetres has fallen this week over some of the best snow spots.

Hot off the back of a massive dumping of the white stuff this week, snow spots around Australia have opened up a week early.

The official snow season usually kicks off on June 8 but there have been such heavy blizzard-like conditions in New South Wales and Victoria that they're opening their doors early to absolute keen beans.

Perisher will kick off things tomorrow while Mt Buller is giving people a free ride on their new Bourke Street Express Chairlift.

In addition to that, Mt Buller and Mt Stirling will be offering half priced lift tickets until the official season starts.

Up to 60 centimetres has fallen on some of our best spots, meaning you could get stuck in to most parts of each mountain.

Perisher's communications director Joss McAlpin told the Sydney Morning Herald: "We actually haven't seen the sun in three days. Since Monday morning we've had blizzard conditions. We like to be the first to open, but opening in May is pretty unheard of.

"We're hoping to pick up another 10-20 centimetres of natural snowfall out of that."

Thredbo's Resort Operations Manager Stuart Driver added: "This is a great snowfall, with just under two weeks out from the start of the 2019 season.

"With more snow expected this week and Thredbo's ability to complement this with snow-making, we are very excited for the season ahead."

That's a pretty decent run of snow so early in the season, so let's hope the good times keep rolling through Australia's higher regions.

This should be no surprise considering Australia shivered through the coldest May day in 20 years. A wintry blast swept across much of southern Australia meaning we will still be cold until at least tomorrow.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster, Jiwon Park, told news.com.au: "What is interesting is that, until last week, we were having warmer than average temperatures.

"We are now seeing these proper winter type temperatures coming in about a month late. We should have been seeing this type of weather from late April."

So if you're wondering what to do this weekend, you can head down to your closest snow spot and carve up the fresh snow.
