A baby born via an emergency caesarean section was left with a huge cut across her cheek.

Kyanni Williams needed to have 13 stitches for the deep wound across her left cheek following her birth in Denver, Colorado last Wednesday.

Kyanni's grandfather Walter Williams told Fox 31: "To have your granddaughter born to come out to see the plastic surgeon, to get 13 stitches, is devastating, it's heart-breaking."

While dad Damarqus Williams added: "It's upsetting, she's not comfortable."

Mum Reazjhana Williams said she's still trying to 'understand' what happened during the birth.

She told the news outlet: "I tried to be understanding about what happened, but on top of the fact her face got cut and a plastic surgeon had to come do it, there's just a lot of things I'm not understanding with the C-section.

"I've never heard of anybody having to deal with their baby's face looking like this after a C-section."

Reazjhana said she had planned to give birth naturally and she was given a pill at Denver Health to help speed up her labour.

However, she was then rushed into surgery where medics performed an emergency C-section.

Damarqus went on: "They said our baby made a sudden movement they couldn't hear her heartbeat or find it and they took her into an immediate C-section."

When little Kyanni was born the Williams' say they were left feeling heartbroken after seeing the injury to her cheek.

The new parents say doctors told them their baby's head was close to the placenta wall when the C-section was performed.

Grandmother Tashaira Williams is now demanding doctors be held accountable for what happened to the new-born.

She told Fox 31: "I don't think that's right. They have to be held accountable for what they did."

Cuts on babies during C-sections are rare, with one advanced practice nurse telling Fox 31 she'd 'done over probably 2,500 deliveries and assisted on C-sections' and had never seen anything like this before.

In a statement, Denver Health said: "Denver Health has been in touch with the family directly. While this is a known medical complication in emergency C-sections, our focus is always on providing care in the best interest of the mother and child."
