This is the terrifying moment a couple's car is smashed into by an oncoming speeding vehicle.

Stephen Fairhurst, 60, and his wife Gail, 58, were on their way to go shopping when they were crashed into by the rogue vehicle, which is seen swerving on to the wrong side of the road before smashing into the couple's car in a dramatic head-on collision.

The terrifying footage was captured on the couple's dash cam as they travelled down Park Spring Road in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

The footage shows the car in front dodge the vehicle by seconds before their own car is smashed into. The last thing we see in the video is what appears the car to be flipping over.

Gail, who works for the council, said: "The car came out of nowhere, it was absolutely terrifying.

"We were travelling at 40mph, while the other car must have been driving at over 100mph.

"All the airbags went off and Stephen was knocked unconscious.

"We were both taken to Barnsley Hospital by an ambulance after passers-by called for help.

"Stephen broke his foot, while I was left badly bruised and we were both very shaken."

The couple's Hyundai 4x4 car was written off in the collision, which has left the pair extremely nervous to be back on the roads. Gail said: "We were due to go to Benidorm a week after it happened and had to cancel due to our injuries.

"Stephen is a security guard and now he struggles with being on his feet all day.

"We didn't see the other car until it hit us. We didn't stand a chance.

"The car in front only just managed to swerve out of the way in the nick of time."

Since the incident, Gail now says that everybody should be using a dash cam when they drive.

"It's so important to record now as there are so many dangerous drivers on the roads.

"Watching the footage was hard as it was such a scary moment.

"I'm not sure that myself or Stephen will ever fully get over it. But I'm just thankful that nobody was killed."

As for the other driver, Michael Beardsley, 39, he was given a hefty fine and a 12-month driving ban for his careless driving.

So let that be a warning to us all: be vigilant when you're out and about in your cars.

There are some very dodgy drivers out there.
