A young girl was forced to jump off a four-storey building to escape a 'sexual predator who attacked her'.

The 12-year-old girl survived the jump as she fell into a make-shift safety net made from cloth that was being used to cover a rickshaw below. She is now reported to be in hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.

The incident took place on the outskirts of Mumbai in India, and police have now launched an investigation.

According to local media, the would-be attacker was seen asking the young girl for directions shortly before her dramatic escape attempt was caught on CCTV.

He persuaded the child to go with him to the address, a nearby building which is currently under construction, where it's alleged he sexually assaulted her.

The girl was later seen sitting on the ledge four-floors up; she was spotted by a number of rickshaw workers after her shoe fell off and landed near them.

At first, it's reported, the men believed she might have been intending to kill herself. They quickly used the cloth they were working with to create a safety net and told the little girl to jump into it.

She jumped down into the net, however, it is reported to have given way and the girl hit the floor, breaking a bone in her back.

Police later told the men the girl had reported that she had been desperately trying to escape from the man when she jumped.
