Greta Thunberg has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The teenager has been put forward by Swedish politicians Jens Holm and Hakan Svenneling, of the country's Left Party.

They said the 17-year-old environmentalist has 'worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis', adding: "Action for reducing our emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is therefore also an act of making peace."

This comes after the young activist was named TIME magazine's Person of the Year for 2019, and had a tree named after her in Australia.

In an article that explained why Thunberg had been named as the Person of the Year, TIME's editor-in-chief Edward Felsentha wrote: "When she first heard about global warming as an eight-year-old, Thunberg says she thought, 'That can't be happening, because if that were happening, then the politicians would be taking care of it.'

"That they weren't is precisely what motivated her to act, as it has youth the world over who are forcing us to confront the peril of our own inaction, from the student-led protests on the streets of Santiago, Chile, to the young democracy activists fighting for rights and representation in Hong Kong to the high schoolers from Parkland, Fla., whose march against gun violence Thunberg cites as an inspiration for her climate strikes."

She became the youngest person ever to be awarded the prestigious title.

And just last month Manchester City Council honoured Greta by naming one of its salt spreaders after her.

The council put out a poll to the public to name its new fleet of salt trucks, which are out and about in the northern city this winter.

She evidently captured the public imagination sufficiently to inspire the naming of one of the council's eight trucks, which will be called Gritter Thunberg.

Greta's salt truck is just the tip of the iceberg (geddit); some of the others included in the fleet are Spreaddie Mercury (obviously after Freddie Mercury), Grit Astley (after Rick Astley, although this one seems a bit of a reach), and Snowel Gallagher, after Oasis' Noel Gallagher.

Others to make the final cut include Basil Salty (after Basil Fawlty) and Snowbi-Gone Kenobi (Star Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi) - a double pun for you there.

Councillor Angeliki Stogia, Executive Member for Environment, Planning and Transport, said: "So many suggestions were received that it was hard to whittle them down, but the public decided on some cracking names for our new gritters - including a Mancunian connection in 'Snowel Gallagher'."
