If you're looking for flat-pack furniture, a chic desk lamp or a nice throw for your sofa, then IKEA is the place.

However, if you're looking for a nice map of the world, to put above your sofa with the nice throw, then sadly IKEA is probably not the place for you.

In an embarrassing turn of events, the Swedish outlet somehow managed to miss off an entire country from their Bjorksta map.

That country is New Zealand.

The glaring geographical error was spotted in a store in Washington DC and photograph of the $29 map was - obviously - shared on social media.

One person posted the pic on Reddit, with the caption: "Ikea's map game is not on point."

If things couldn't get any more awkward, the trendy chain is currently in the process of opening its first store in...New Zealand. Oof.

And this wasn't lost on those irate shoppers who shared the mistake on Twitter.

One person wrote: "What's the deal #IKEA with forgetting an entire country off the world maps you are selling? #NewZealand exists!!!!"

Another said: "Hopefully #Ikea won't be using their own map to find us when they open their first store in #NewZealand."

A third person put: "Was just sent this - Think @ikea need to add @newzealand to their map before the first store here opens....."

This isn't the first time the country has been omitted from maps of the world, and New Zealanders have been fighting to stop the trend.

Last year, the country's government employed the services of comedian and star of the hit sitcom, Flight of the Conchords, Rhys Darby, to help spread the word.

The actor even made a video in which he described the 'conspiracy' against the southern hemisphere country - which he said was 'bigger than the moon landing and Loch Ness combined'.

New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern launched her 'get New Zealand on the map' campaign in a post to her official Facebook account.

She wrote: "Admit it. You've noticed the absence of New Zealand on world maps before too. Some call it a conspiracy (I'm looking at you @RhysDarby) some call it negligent...either way it's time for a wee campaign! Help us #getNZonthemap."

You had one job, IKEA.
