Austrian police have said one person has been killed and several others have been seriously injured following gunfire in the capital Vienna.

There are several suspects armed with rifles and six different shooting locations. One suspect was shot and killed by police officers.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told public broadcaster ORF: "It appears to have been a terror attack."

The shooting reportedly took place in the street where the city's main synagogue is located, according to Oskar Deutsch, the head of the Jewish community in Vienna.

It's not yet clear whether the place of worship had been targeted but the synagogue was closed when the gunfire took place.

In a translated tweet, Mr Deutsch said: "At the moment it cannot be said whether the city temple was one of the goals.

"What is certain, however, is that both the synagogue in Seitenstettengasse and the office building at the same address were no longer in operation and closed at the time of the first shots.

"In any case, there was shooting in the immediate vicinity of the city temple. All parishioners were asked not to enter public streets and to remain in closed rooms until the all-clear from the security authorities with the IKG security department."

Police said the operation in the centre of the city was ongoing and urged people to avoid all open spaces and public transport.

The police tweeted: "There are several injured persons. We are on site with all available forces. Please avoid all public squares in the city."

Police added that the exact circumstances of the incident were still being determined.

Austrian public broadcaster ORF cited witnesses as saying several shots were fired shortly after 8pm.
