Manchester City have announced the death of Pep Guardiola's mother Dolors Sala Carrio, who had contracted coronavirus at the age of 82.

Taking to Twitter, the English football club wrote that manager Guardiola's mother had passed away in Manresa, Barcelona.

Manchester City went on to add: "Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends."

Responding to the tweet, Tottenham Hotspur's official account wrote: "Everyone at Spurs sends their deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with Pep and his family at this time".

Brighton and Hove Albion echoed the message while Liverpool added: "Deepest condolences from everybody at Liverpool FC. Our thoughts are with Pep and his family at this time."

Rival team Manchester United replied with the hashtag #ACityUnited while many Manchester United supporters followed.

Many football fans took the opportunity to send reminders to people that they should be staying inside. One commented: "That brings it right home... feel gutted for Pep and his family. Please folks stay at home and stay as safe as possible."

Another said: "Sad news. Football is so unimportant right now. Condolences to Pep Guardiola. Very sorry for his loss."

Last month, Pep made a €1 million (£870,000) donation to the Barcelona-based Angel Soler Daniel Foundation, which is linked to the Official College of Doctors of Barcelona to help its fight against coronavirus, according to the Mirror.

The 100-year-old medical institution said: "Pep Guardiola has made a donation of one million euros to the Fundacio Angel Soler Daniel for the acquisition and supply of health equipment to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic."
