Shocking home security footage shows the moment a resident turned the tables on three would-be armed robbers who were attempting to break into his apartment.

Video caught by a Ring camera shows three men breaking through the front door of a property in Neptune Beach, Florida. Seconds after they go inside the apartment, a series of shots can be heard before the three men flee.

Neptune Beach Police said the lone resident was an adult man, who grabbed his gun and fired at the intruders.

Police have said one of the men received a shot to the chest and is currently in hospital, while the other two men are still on the run.

CCTV footage from nearby caught the three men escaping in two cars - a red Kia and a silver Pontiac.

Shortly after the break-in one of the men went to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest and is currently being treated, Commander Mike Key with the Neptune Beach Police Department said.

Cops are now appealing for anyone with any information about the men to come forward.

Sharing photos the suspects Neptune Beach Police Department said in a statement: "Neptune Beach Police Department is actively looking for two suspects regarding tonight's shooting investigation at Park Place Apartment Complex, 1000 3rd St.

"Three armed black males forcibly entered into an apartment to commit an apparent Armed Robbery. After one suspect was shot by the homeowner, all three suspects fled in what appears to be a red Kia 4-door sedan, possibly FL Temp Tag."

The force warned that the suspects 'should be considered armed and dangerous', adding: "Do not approach them."

Former Jacksonville Sheriff's Office detective Ken Jefferson told News4Jax: "No matter who you are, this is a very scary situation.

"This homeowner realises he has the right to protect himself, and he pulls out his gun and he begins to fire. He's well within justification to do that."

The man who fired the shots will not face any charges.
