The horse that finished last during the Melbourne Cup, Rostropovich, has suffered a suspected cracked pelvis.

The horse appeared to be struggling as it finished the 'Race that Stops the Nation' and its trainers have realised something has gone seriously wrong.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn said: "He hasn't pulled up too well. He's obviously sustained an injury somewhere in the run."

Racing Victoria has issued a statement about the horse's condition.

"Racing Victoria (RV) stewards advise that the Hayes, Hayes and Dabernig-trained Rostropovich was inspected by RV veterinarians following the running of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse today and was found to be lame," the statement said.

"After receiving veterinary care on the course, the horse has been transported to the University of Melbourne Equine Centre for further assessment."

One of Rostropovich's trainers, David Hayes, is optimistic about the horse's future.

"He couldn't weight bear. But I think with a lot of painkillers he's relieved. It's a sad story anyway," he said.

Champion trainer Peter Moody added to Network 10: "Rostropovich, has pulled up with a little bit of an injury and has been transferred to the vet clinic for further examination.

"He did complete the race, but they want to seek further information on that."
