A terrifying video showing firefighters driving into bushfires in Australia has been shared online, highlighting the danger the brave teams put themselves into.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales uploaded the shocking clip alongside the caption: "The crew from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 509 Wyoming recorded this video showing the moment their truck was overrun by the bushfire burning South of Nowra.

"The crew was forced to shelter in their truck as the fire front passed through."

The firefighters were called out at around 3pm local time on New Year's Eve to an area just outside South Nowra - which is currently graded as a Bushfire Emergency, the highest level of bushfire alert.

The firefighters had to take shelter inside the truck, holding up blankets to the windows as flames licked at the vehicle.

In a follow-up tweet, the Fire and Rescue New South Wales confirmed that all the crew were safe.

After the clip was shared online the firefighters have been heaped with praise for their bravery, with one person posting: "And to think this is a one-minute clip of what fire fighters across Australia are experiencing. You're all amazing. We are all behind you. We are fighting for climate action in your name. Stay safe, know we are so incredibly, incredibly grateful."

Another added: "You do amazing work. You are brilliant. Stay safe."

Meanwhile in Victoria around 5,000 people were moved onto a beach to escape a huge bushfire.

Photos shared on social media who Mallacoota covered in an eerie red glow.

Mark Tregellas, one of those evacuated, told the ABC: "It was pitch black until about five minutes ago, now the sky is red, it's starting to get embers coming out of the sky, the wind is coming directly at us from the west so everyone's about as prepped and ready as they can be.

"Looking towards the west from the boat ramp we just see a red glow. I can't see any flames at the moment. And it's only at this stage just the odd ember that's coming down, so only just spotted two or three that have been coming from the area."

Another Gippsland resident, Francesca Winterson, told ABC: "It's not pleasant, it's pitch dark here and the emergency vehicles have disappeared from sight.

"The power's been out here a long time and we've run out of solar.

"My home's in the fire path, I won't have a home, that's just the way it's going to be, we have to try and be calm.
