Chrissy Teigen has defended herself on Twitter after the Lip Sync Battle star rubbed some of the platform's users up the wrong way by tweeting about accidentally ordering a $13,000 (£9,500) bottle of wine while out for dinner.

Teigen is known for being candid on her Twitter account and earlier this week had revealed she was having a tough time of it as her son Jack - who she and husband John Legend lost last year due to complications with her pregnancy - would have been due to be born this week.

Evidently, though, a follow-up throwaway story wasn't read in the context of Teigen's week by some of her followers and she started trending for the wrong reasons.

The 35 year-old had tweeted: "One time John and I were at a restaurant and the waiter recommended a nice Cabernet. We got the bill and it was 13,000 dollars. HOW DO U CASUALLY RECOMMEND THAT WINE. We didn't even finish it and it had been cleared!!!"

Many people found this amusing, but she started trending after receiving a growing backlash too.

Among thousands of quote-tweets, one user wrote: "HAHAHAH I hate it when I go for dinner and the bill is someone's annual salary but it's okay because I can afford it."

Another wrote: "Accidentally getting charged $13,000 would be life ruining for basically every person I know and it's just a quirky anecdote for you."

Teigen has now hit back, tweeting: "Me, sharing story of getting screwed over by a waiter. Shares story of rough week, baby would have been born. Feeling anxious, sad. You: let's f***ing own this rich b**** for retweets."

She went on to add: "Hey, not everything I say on my Twitter is going to be relatable to you because it is my life and my Twitter and my stories.

"I see your tweets, I get your jokes, you are so funny, yes, you really nailed me."

Teigen went further than that, too, and started replying to posters in order to stand up for herself.

One follower responded to Teigen: "I'm sorry you shared a really f***ing insensitive story about casually throwing away $13,000 on a platform for all to see during a recession/job crisis/pandemic?

"That it is a rough week for you does not mend the horrors of what everyday ppl are going through that u could NEVER."

The model fired back: "My god. I am a real person you know. Are we having rough week olympics?"

She went on to say: "Honestly, I will be that person for you. It is fun to gang up on me. I *see* the convos that bring you together in your owning of me. I make it easy. Have fun."

Teigen's tough week is set to continue, with the star set to undergo surgery for endometriosis, a condition where the tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places.

She tweeted: "My little Jack would have been born this week so I'm a bit off. I truly feel kicks in my belly, but it's not phantom. I have surgery for endometriosis tomorrow... but the period feeling this month is exactly like baby kicks. sigh."
