Two Australian journalists have had frightening moments while covering London protests over George Floyd's death in America.

Rallies, protests and demonstrations have erupted in every state of the US and they've now spilled into other cities around the world.

Channel 9's Europe correspondent Sophie Walsh was doing a live cross with 9News Adelaide yesterday about how protests in Paris turned violent and the events planned for England's capital.

As she was explaining how the protest was expected to play out, the camera cut to images of violent scenes of other protests. As that happened, Sophie started screaming and looked startled when the camera came back to her.

She claimed that a man came up behind and grabbed her before threatening to stab the journalist.

"Sorry, I just had someone come up and try and...a man just came up and grabbed me. It's okay, he's not armed," a visibly shaken Sophie told the camera.

Her cameraman ended up chasing him down and, with the help of bystanders, detained him until police arrived.

Sophie has thanked people for their kind messages of support.

"The man has been arrested for threats to kill and carrying a weapon," the Channel 9 reporter wrote on Twitter. "I'm shaken but ok. Big thanks to my incredible camerman Jason Conduit who chased him down armed with a light stand and got him arrested."

Later that day Ben Avery was reporting from London about how another protest was unfolding.

As he crossed to The Today Show, clashes between police and protestors started erupting and he and his team were forced to run. The whole ordeal was captured as the scenes played out during the live cross.

Ben followed it up on Twitter, saying: "Thanks to everyone for your concern after this.

"Had been a peaceful protest until things took a turn late. The microphone was pulled from my hand and we were chased down the street by a large group. Big thanks to rock solid cameraman Cade Thompson, our security guard and police."

Protests in London were largely peaceful as demonstrators gathered in Hyde Park.

Among those who gathered was Star Wars actor John Boyega, who stood up and gave an impassioned speech to the crowd in Hyde Park.

The tearful 28-year-old told the crowd that it was time for people to come together and overcome the prejudices that permeate society.

He said: "We are a physical representation of our support for George Floyd. We are a physical representation of our support for Sandra Bland. We are a physical representation of our support for Trayvon Martin. We are a physical representation of our support for Stephen Lawrence.

"I'm speaking to you from my heart. Look, I don't know if I'm going to have a career after this, but f*** that.

"Today is about innocent people who were halfway through their process, we don't know what George Floyd could have achieved, we don't know what Sandra Bland could have achieved, but today we're going to make sure that won't be an alien thought to our young ones."
