Two students have sadly died after falling into a waterfall in Scotland.

Jitendranath Karuturi, 26, and Chanhakya Bolisetti, 22, drowned after they fell at a beauty spot in the Highlands.

It's thought they were taking pictures at the Linn of Tummel waterfall, near Blair Atholl.

The Scottish fire and rescue service began a search with two rescue boats, but sadly their bodies were discovered the same evening.

The pair were master's students studying data science and engineering at the University of Dundee. It is reported that Karuturi also worked at the City Quay restaurant in the city.

“Everyone is devastated. Jitu was really popular with everybody,” restaurant manager, Vaseem Salimi, told The Courier.

“He had just finished his master’s and was telling everyone his plans about what he was doing now. It was devastating for everyone.

“He was very polite and mild-mannered - you would get no drama from him. He was calm all the time. He never had an argument or fell out with anybody. He was extremely reliable for work. He never let us down, ever.”

Meanwhile, Dundee University said: “This has been a tragic accident which has shocked us all and our thoughts are with the families and friends of the students.”

Police Scotland said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

They said in a statement: “Around 7pm on Wednesday 17 April we received a report of two men, aged 22 and 26 years, in the water at the Linn of Tummel waterfall near Blair Atholl.

“Emergency services attended and following searches in the area, the bodies of two men were recovered from the water.

"Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, however there would not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding these deaths.”

According to The Times of India, the Indian high commission is in touch with the families of both students.

“Two Indian students hailing from Andhra Pradesh drowned in an unfortunate incident Wednesday evening and their bodies were found a little downstream," said a spokesperson.

"Consulate general of India has been in touch with families of the students and a consular official has met the relative of one the students who lives in the UK.

"University of Dundee has assured of all help. The post-mortem is expected to take place on 19 April and thereafter procedures for repatriating bodies to India will be done."
