Prince Harry has asked his brother, The Duke of Cambridge, to be best man at his wedding to Meghan Markle, according to a tweet from Kensington Palace today.

Prince William has said he is 'honoured' to be chosen as Prince Harry's Best Man at the latest Royal Wedding to Meghan Markle on 19 May. Presumably protocol says he has to give that sort of response, but still, it's nice, isn't it?

The Duke of Cambridge, who welcomed the birth of his third child earlier this week, is said to be 'very much looking forward to supporting his brother' when he marries Meghan Markle at St George's Chapel in Windsor, with approximately 600 guests invited to the ceremony.

According to Sky News, when asked about the possibility of being best man in January, William responded: "He hasn't asked me yet... so it could be a sensitive issue."

Fortunately for Wills' pride, it looks like Harry has made his mind up now after a series of tweets were posted from the official Kensington Palace Twitter page.

The palace posted the news alongside a throwback picture (well, it is Thursday) of the two princes as children, wearing police helmets as well as the sort of questionable fashion choices you'd expect parents to have made for their kids in the early 90s. As anyone who remembers the period will tell you, it was a simpler time.

Prince William was tipped to be beside his brother for the wedding next month but, as LADbible previously reported, it was thought that this might not go ahead due to a technicality.

What technicality, I hear you ask? Well, according to British and European royalty expert, Marlene Koenig, there's no such thing as a 'best man' at a Royal Wedding.

She explained: "The best man or best men are officially called 'supporters'. William will probably be Harry's supporter."

The Prince of Wales stuck with that rule and named his brother Prince Andrew to be his supporter when he married Diana in 1981.

Interestingly, Prince William broke protocol in 2011 and named Harry as his best man.

The Daily Mail reported that Harry joked he would refuse to participate in anything to do with the wedding unless he was awarded the title. And fair enough, best man - the BEST of the men - has a nicer ring to it than supporter, which sounds like he'd be waving a scarf from the touchline.

It seems the pair are happy to break the rules to stick together and who can blame them?

As best man, Prince William will be required to carry out formal duties on the day, including keeping the couple's rings safe ahead of the ceremony.

It's also traditional for the best man to make a speech on the big day.

It's looking like a busy few weeks for the Duke of Cambridge who will be juggling a newborn, two toddlers and all the arrangements for the wedding of the year - we wish him all the best. Here's hoping he gets some kip too.
