The horrifying details of how a man was reportedly decapitated in a rail accident at Wandsworth Common train station have been described by a witness.

An unnamed female has explained what apparently happened in the incident shortly after 5.30pm on Sunday and revealed the moment the man's 'head flew off' as he was killed.

The accident happened on an express shuttle train which was travelling between Gatwick airport and London Victoria.

It is claimed the victim put his head out of the window when the train was close to Wandsworth Common station and he was struck by a passing train.

The witness told Wandsworth Radio, which is a community online radio station run by volunteers from across the London borough: "He lifted his head out and didn't notice the train was coming. The head flew off. I ran.

"It was disgusting. The train stopped and people were screaming, they were coming out.

"I just had to turn my head away. There were 15 people in the carriage."

It has also been claimed in some reports that the man was killed when stood next to a mum and her daughter.

Reports continue to circulate in the media, although British Transport Police (BTP) have seemingly dismissed the witness accounts.

BTP Inspector James Tyrrell said: "We are aware of a number of reports on social media which say the man was decapitated, however this is not the case.

"A spokeswoman for London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 5.34pm to reports of an incident at Wandsworth Common railway station.

"We sent an ambulance crew, a single responder and a car and an incident response officer to the scene alongside an air ambulance."We treated a person at the scene for a head injury but sadly they were pronounced dead by the doctor from the air ambulance."
