Australian singer Nick Cave has announced his son Jethro has sadly passed away at the age of 31.

Cave said in a statement: "With much sadness, I can confirm that my son, Jethro, has passed away. We would be grateful for family privacy at this time."

Jethro was born to his Melbourne-based model mother in 1991.

While his mother claims Jethro never met his father until he was seven-years-old, he allegedly used his father's name to drive his own modelling career, as reported in The Daily Mail.

In what's the second tragedy to hit the family, the news comes seven years after Cave lost his younger son, Arthur, in 2015.

The 15-year-old fell off a cliff in the East Sussex town Ovingdean and was found on a coastal path on the underpass of Ovingdean Gap.

He died later at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Sussex Police said his death was not suspicious and the coroner claimed it was 'accidental'.

However, an inquest heard Arthur had taken LSD with a friend and he was seen 'staggering' on his own before he fell off the cliff.

During evidence given by pathologist Dr Simi George, Ms Hamilton-Deeley asked: "The history you had was that LSD was used?"

Dr George replied: "Yes."

He was found with 'multiple traumatic injuries due to a fall from a height'.

Recording a conclusion of accidental death, Ms Hamilton-Deeley, said: "I expect the decision and planning to take LSD, or a hallucinogenic drug likely to be LSD, was made on the spur of the moment.

"It's clear he could not know what was real and what was not real.

"It's completely impossible to know what was in Arthur's mind and what he was seeing."

At the time, in a statement issued after the inquest, the Cave family said they had been 'overwhelmed' by the messages of support from people 'in Brighton and beyond'.

It read: "Arthur was a wonderfully unruly, creative and free-spirited young man with an infectious, happy, funny daredevil nature.

"He loved his friends and family, idolised his twin brother Earl and was never far from his side."

Father Cave is perhaps best known for his music and fronting the rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

A documentary based on his career is set to be released on 11 May and will be titled This Much I Know To Be True.
