A new plane nicknamed 'Son of the Concorde' could see passengers fly from London to New York in just three-and-a-half hours.

Yep, the future is here and you could soon fly to the Big Apple quicker than it takes to watch Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - or do both at the same time for the best flight ever.

Designs for the aircraft, named Overture, were released on 19 July.

According to the company, the new plane will be 'the world’s fastest airliner, optimized for speed, safety, and sustainability'.

And it looks like something straight out of a James Bond film.

The aircraft will be able to carry 65-80 passengers "at twice the speed of today’s airliners and running on 100 per cent sustainable aviation fuel."

According to Boom Supersonic, the impressive design is the culmination of "26 million core-hours of simulated software designs, five wind tunnel tests, and the careful evaluation of 51 full design iterations."

Basically, it's been tested and fine-tuned to literally make you feel like you're flying into the future.

The plane could see passengers fly from London to New York in under four hours.

So, what features does the plane have? Well, it boasts four powerful engines and "the world’s first automated noise reduction system," meaning it'll be an incredibly tranquil ride.

The design and the speed of Overture is something that's pushing air travel forward, with Boom Founder and CEO Blake Scholl saying of the development: "Aviation has not seen a giant leap in decades. Overture is revolutionary in its design, and it will fundamentally change how we think about distance."

"With more than 600 routes across the globe, Overture will make the world dramatically more accessible for tens of millions of passengers."

The new plane should be quieter than your average airliner.

The plane won't just be for the public though, because the company also announced that they'd be partnering with Northrop Grumman to develop variants for the U.S and its allies.

Scholl said of the partnership: "Time is a strategic advantage in high consequence scenarios, from emergency evacuations to disaster response.

"This collaboration between Boom and Northrop Grumman unlocks the potential for Overture to provide the US and our allies with an unmatched high-speed capability when and where it’s most needed."

So, there you have it, the coolest plane in the world's just been made and, hopefully, you'll be able to experience your very own Top Gun moment soon.

That is when the plane is actually made available for use; Overture is currently expected to fly in 2026 and take passengers by 2029.
