Brazilian football team slammed for 'ignorant' response to Australian traditional Haka

One synonymous aspect of Oceanian culture has been disrespected by members of the Brazilian men's national football team.

Managed by five-time Champions League-winning coach Carlo Ancelotti, the likes of Bruno Guimarães, Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Marquinhos and Estêvão landed in Queensland this week for a pair of international friendlies.

The 'Socceroos', who were knocked out of this summer's World Cup by Egypt on penalties in the Round of 32, will first play Brazil in Townsville today (25 September) and then in Brisbane next Tuesday (29 September).

To mark this big-time occasion, local aborigines (including children) performed a traditional haka for Brazil's superstars as a gesture of welcome.

This posture-dancing around a burning tree branch went completely over the heads of some Brazilian players though, who seemed rather amused by their hosts' routine.

The fact they were filmed on camera sniggering and not taking the ceremony seriously has caused a bit of a stir online.

Reacting to a video of the exchange that is circulating around Reddit, one person wrote: "Brazil's players laughing at the welcome ceremony that Australia's Indigenous peoples put on for them. They demand respect and cry when they feel they're not respected, but they're not capable of respecting others."

Another added: "A lack of respect, cracking up laughing at it — for them it's something sacred, and these guys with their peanut-sized brains are laughing," while a third user highlighted the historical ignorance on display.

"It's supposed to be a ritual of respect, of welcome, and the dudes laughing in their faces, disrespecting one of the world's oldest cultures and a people who suffered a lot and continue suffering to this day," they shared.

"F**k these guys for real. Those RIDICULOUS dudes with ZERO maturity, disrespecting such a beautiful culture, laughing like they're 5-year-old boys. I thought that was really ugly of them; I especially take offence because I'm half Australian," read a response.

Speaking ahead of kick-off today in front of the press, Italian native Ancelotti spoke glowingly of Barcelona's Raphinha, who was ruled out of the recent World Cup due to injury.

"Raphinha is doing incredible things in a position that was not originally his, but now seems to have become his as well,” he said, referring to his player's new No.9 positioning for the Catalan club.

On Real Madrid superstar Vinicius, who is now domestically managed by José Mourinho, the 67-year-old told reporters: "Perhaps he is not going through his best moment right now. But we are convinced that both of them will be starters in the future."

Brazil's confirmed starting lineup against Australia is as follows: Hugo Souza, Matheuzinho, Marquinhos, Vitor Reis, Douglas Santos, Bruno Guimarães, Danilo Santos; Raphinha, Estevão, Vinicius and Endrick.

Australia manager Tony Popovic has chosen this 11 for the match in Townsville: Patrick Beach, Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar, Lucas Herrington, Jacob Italiano, Jackson Irvine, Paul Okon-Engstler, Aziz Behich, Connor Metcalfe, Nestory Irankunda and Kusini Yengi.

The last time these two teams played each other was back in 2017, with Brazil coming out on top 4-0 in another friendly.
