Golfer Charley Hull refuses to apologise for 'cruel' £100,000 prank on caddie

Playing pranks on our mates is a staple of British culture but it seems as if the internet doesn't always find it funny when it's caught on film.

While it's somewhat refreshing to have a big name from the world of sport showing a bit of personality, Charley Hull has still come in for pelters after her recent video.

The British golfer, who is ranked number seven in the world, showed little care for cancel culture when she filmed her caddie's reaction to winning 100k on a scratch card, only to learn that they were joke scratch cards purchased by Hull from a joke shop.

Adam Woodward has caddied for Hull for the past 11 years so will be well used to her sense of humour, even if he did look devastated at the prospect of losing out on such a significant amount of money, and it was his reaction which perhaps spurred many online to call the 30-year-old golfer 'cruel'.

However, she's now hit back at those comments, while she continues to compete at the Women's Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

She said: “People that have complaints about it, I would say loosen up. I don’t have my social media on my phone on tournament weeks. I delete it and when I go home I’ll add it again.

"I don’t really like people seeing me and tagging me and stuff. I like to keep in the present moment. But I think people need to lighten up if they’re taking that too seriously because it was pretty funny.”

Despite the backlash, Hull added she would '100%' participate in a similar scenario again, suggesting that her caddie did find it funny after the initial shock wore off.

She added: “He thought it was funny after, he is not uptight. It’s a joke. If people don’t like it they can lump it, do you know what I mean?

“I felt bad for Adam but at the end of the day I have just got to have a good week. At the end of the week I’ll buy him 100 scratch cards."

Well, that sounds like a pretty good result for Woodward in the end, especially since they get the bonding experience of scratching those cards together, even if he doesn't end up winning anywhere near that amount of money.

Should Hull win an elusive first major championship this time out, then she will claim a massive prize of $1.5 million, which is the highest in the 50-year history of the Women's British Open.

So Woodward will be praying that she does claim victory, not just because of the amount of scratch cards his bonus might land him, but also since they're obviously close friends.

And if the internet still can't get on board with this prank, just imagine how they will feel when Woodward doesn't bring a spare pair of pants for Hull at her next tournament, as it's a well known rule that golfers always need to have two pairs with them in case they get a hole in one.
