Footage shows England gymnast's horror fall before being stretchered off with injury at Commonwealth Games

Horrifying footage shows the moment that a gymnast at the Commonwealth Games fell from the horizontal bars during a routine.

Gabriel Langton had been performing a routine on the horizontal bars when he missed the bars while falling.

In a gut-wrenching moment Langton, 19, plummeted headfirst to the floor, landing heavily on his head and neck as the audience gasped in shock.

Langton was carried away on a stretcher while wearing a neck brace approximately 11 minutes after the fall, with Team England later confirming he had been taken to hospital where his health is being monitored, Sky News reports.

On Friday, a spokesperson said: "We are grateful to the medical teams who responded immediately to provide assistance.

"He [Langton] has been taken to hospital and we will share more information when it is available."

Team officials have since confirmed that Langton was moving and speaking to doctors at hospital after the horrific fall.

Langton's teammates have since spoken out about the incident, with teammate Luke Whitehouse saying: "When something like that happens, you've just got to forget about it and reset. I just had to focus on my routine one skill at a time."

Speaking about how Langton is doing, he added: "From what we've heard, he's doing OK. Gymnastics is such a dangerous sport and things like this remind us of that. It's one of those things you have to put out of your mind."

Whitehouse was in the unenviable position of being the next athlete to take to the bars after Langton's fall, and appeared visibly affected by what had just happened, scoring 11.70.

"It was really tough," Whitehouse said. "We just had to reset, try to put it to one side mentally and focus on the job we had to do.

"I think everyone should be proud of the way we carried on after Gabe's fall.

"We all agreed we'd take another warm-up and bring our energy back into it. There was a delay after the first warm-up, but we regrouped.

"The coaches were fantastic, and the boys who had to go up on high bar were incredible. The togetherness of the team really showed, and I couldn't be prouder of everyone."

England had been facing off against Canada for a medal when the fall happened, and Canadian Felix Dolci also sent his best wishes to Langton and the England team on behalf of himself and Canada.

"It's terrible but it goes to show that gymnastics is a very, very difficult and complicated sport," he said. "It's dangerous you know sometimes.

"All our thoughts go to Gabriel and the team. Pushing through this is definitely not easy, England stayed focussed, they stayed in the zone, a huge shout out to them because that's not an easy one.

"For any gymnast that was on the field of play, seeing this not only is difficult, but something you never want to see. It goes to show how hard the sport is."

The awful incident left a shadow over the remainder of the competition in which England and Canada faced off for the Commonwealth Games gold medal.

In the end England would take silver, while the Canadian team ploughed on ahead to take the gold medal in the competition.
