HYROX athlete who refused to quit race after soiling herself speaks out on 'very confronting' backlash

The endurance athlete at the centre of the biohazard HYROX scandal has offered people an apology for what went down in Beijing.

Joanna Wietrzyk, 24, said she has been taking 'some time to reflect' on the fiasco that unfolded while she was competing in China in September - which involved her soiling herself on the world stage.

Now the dust has somewhat settled, the Australian has returned to social media to further address the incident ahead of her competing in HYROX's Elite 15 on Friday (30 October).

Wietrzyk made it clear she is keen to bounce back from the events in Beijing in an Instagram video shared on Wednesday (28 October).

Footage of her suffering faecal incontinence while taking part in the HYROX race went viral for all the wrong reasons, while sparking quite the debate among the athletic community.

The fitness buff carried on with the race and even ended up winning it - despite the fact this all happened on carpeted floor and that competitors shared equipment.

Some athletes slammed HYROX for the 'ambiguity in how its health and medical protocols were applied' and claimed it failed to protect participants.

The incident prompted HYROX to change the rules, so now, athletes can be withdrawn if their 'blood, vomit, urine, or faeces poses a welfare or contamination risk to the racer or to other racers'.

Needless to say, it's been a rocky few weeks for Wietrzyk - and she's spent this time stewing over 'everything that happened in Beijing'.

In a clip shared to social media this week, she explained: "I just want to say that I'm truly, truly so sorry to everyone that I affected, whether they were spectators or participants out on that race floor, for my decision to choose to continue to race. And having that time to reflect, I've really learned a lot from the situation, and, yeah, I am very, very sorry for it all."

'It's been a very hard situation to navigate'

Wietrzyk went on: "But I also want to say thank you to each and every person that has reached out for support and have given me this overwhelming amount of support over the past couple weeks.

"It's been a very hard situation to navigate for me and very confronting as well.

"All the support, whether it was personally or through my team, goes a lot longer than I can truly express right now."

Wietrzyk has also been preparing to take part in HYROX's Elite 15 division in Hamburg, Germany.

"I'm racing a couple days time in the Elite 15," she added. "So I'm back out there on the race floor, and I'm super excited to go back doing what I love. And hopefully, see you all out there."

It didn't go unnoticed that Wietrzyk was kitted out in Puma gear in this video, suggesting that previous rumours claiming her sponsor had dropped her did not have any truth behind them.

The comment section was filled with messages of support for Wietrzyk, as people praised her for showing 'strength and humility' in the face of public ridicule, although some questioned why she was being allowed to take part in another HYROX event.

Her coach Chris Bayens previously shared a statement in her defence, while slamming the 'hatred and personal attacks' waged against the athlete.

"No one is perfect, not in sport, not on social media, not in real life," he said at the time. "What happened was extraordinary."

People initially thought that Wietrzyk wasn't too bothered about soiling herself during the women's solo event, due to a quickly-deleted post she shared in the aftermath.,

In wake of the race in Beijing, she shared a selfie to her Instagram Story showing herself attached to an IV drip, alongside the caption: "Go hard or go home...a win is a win. In all seriousness, thank you for all the support."

HYROX officials said they had 'made a mistake by not reacting immediately' and said new procedures have since been put in place 'to prevent situations like this from happening again'.
