Mark Wahlberg is famous for having a ripped physique, which he has achieved and maintained by waking up at the crack of dawn, working out multiple times a day, and wolfing down huge amounts of meat.

But the film star has now turned his back on his carnivorous past after his insatiable appetite for animal protein left him with a 'leaky gut'. Urgh.

Speaking to Men's Health, the 48-year-old revealed he had switched to a plant-based diet - at least for now - and was feeling 'really good'.

He made the shock admission during the publication's 'vs The Internet' concept, where celebs respond to comments left for them online by fans and critics.

Sharing a photo of Mark flexing his muscles, one person asked whether he ever fasted.

To which The Other Guys actor said: "I normally never fast. In this particular shot, I was eating eight meals a day. But eating eight meals a day and sometimes steak two times a day, I was just eating chicken, fish, steak, pork, I found myself towards the end of the movie - six months - with a leaky gut.

"So I did just do a fast, I did a bone broth fast, and I've been eating plant-based for about three weeks now and I gotta tell ya, I feel really good."

Who knows whether this is a permanent move or not, but it sounds like it's doing the trick.

The revelation comes shortly after Wahlberg's latest action comedy Spenser Confidential - which also stars Post Malone - finally hit Netflix last week.

Mark Wahlberg stars opposite Post Malone in Netflix movie Spenser Confidential.

Wahlberg is the titular character - an ex-cop who has just come out of prison. Planning to leave his native Boston for good, he winds up lending a hand to his old boxing coach (played by Alan Arkin) in helping out young MMA fighter Hawk, played by Winston Duke.

However, the pair quickly become embroiled in something much more serious than mixed martial arts when two of Spenser's old colleagues turn up murdered.

It's up to him and the rookie fighter - with help from Spencer's ex-girlfriend, played by Iliza Shlesinger - to uncover what's happened. As they dig deeper into the case they discover gangs, conspiracies and corruption that runs right to the top.

The Spenser Confidential character was originally created by crime writer by Robert B. Parker in the 1970s and built upon by the author Ace Atkins - and the film is loosely based on the latter's novel Wonderland.

Spenser Confidential is available to watch on Netflix now.
