Warning: The article contains spoilers for the first season of The Capture. That's you warned.

The BBC has confirmed that it is working on a second series of hit thriller The Capture.

And what will no doubt be music to the ears of the show's fans, Holliday Grainger, who played DI Rachel Carey in the first season, has signed up once again.

Discussing the new series, Grainger said she was excited to get back to work and see what lies in store for her character.

She said: "I'm excited to be joining Ben Chanan (the creator) and the team for series two of The Capture.

"Ben's meticulously researched world challenges the boundary between possible and probable dark truths and constantly keeps you guessing. I can't wait to explore what he has in store for Rachel Carey next."

Sadly, however, Callum Turner won't be returning to the role of soldier Shaun Emery.

The show was a certified hit, and was BBC iPlayer's biggest new title of 2019, receiving over 22 million requests on BBC iPlayer.

For those of you who don't know, the first series focused on Shaun Emery (Turner) - a soldier who has just been cleared of murdering a civilian thanks to his lawyer Hannah (Laura Haddock), who exposes a glitch in the digital footage that was initially used to prove his guilt.

Emery is then accused of murdering Hannah when CCTV footage show him attacking her at a bus stop - shortly after they had kissed and appeared to be forming a romance.

He claims the footage is fake, but the police argue his PTSD means he's blanking out the attack the footage captures.

With DI Carey (Grainger) drafted in to investigate Shaun's case, she quickly learns that the truth can sometimes be a matter of perspective. Should she trust Emery?

This next bit contains a few spoilers, so if you've not seen the first series, look away now.

Now, it's not quite clear how the story will unfold in the next instalment, however, the last time we tuned in we saw Carey become a member of the dubious Correction team she had planned to expose.

Callum Turner won't be, however.

And according to the show's writer Chanan, season two will delve deeper into this storyline.

Careful not to give too much away, he said: "The Capture series two will see Rachel Carey fall deeper into the dizzying world of fakery and disinformation. She has only just scratched the surface of this conspiracy."

What this means for Carey we'll have to wait and see.

Confirming the show's renewal, BBC's drama boss Piers Wenger said: "The BBC is so proud of The Capture which gripped and enticed audiences, and grew its audience each week from episode three - which is no mean feat."

Every episode of the first series of The Capture is available to watch on iPlayer.
