LAD Runs 67 Miles On Heart-Shaped Route In Memory Of Terror Victims

On the first anniversary of the horrific bombing that took place at an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena last year, a marathon runner embarked upon a 67-mile labour of love to make sure those who died were remembered.

Filmmaker and keen runner Nathan Rae ran a course around the city of Manchester that mapped out a heart with the letters MCR in the middle of it in memory of the 22 people who were killed.

MCR is an abbreviation for Manchester, and fittingly, he ended his journey last night at the arena, where the terrorist attack took place.

He began his journey at 8am on 22 May, from Sale in the south of the city, and ran for more than 18 hours, accompanied by others who joined in for part of his epic journey.

He carefully planned the route to take in some key destinations along the way including Royal Manchester Children's Hospital - where some of the victims were treated - as well fire stations and, of course, the Arena as the final spot.

He tracked the whole thing on his GPS so that he could eventually show off the drawing that his run had made.

On his quest he was met by members of running clubs from around the city, members of his own club - Chorlton Runners - and even a young lad and his father who just ran to the end of the road.

Nathan said: "It's been great, my running club has been out to run with me, as have people from other running clubs.

"A nurse came out to meet me at the children's hospital, UK Fast's runners came out to run with me. It's been great having that support.

"It's called GPS art. People look for pictures in the map, that aren't always obvious but come out when you run. I thought I'd give it a go and do something a bit different to help people smile.

"I did look to see if I could do a bee [a symbol of the city of Manchester] but there weren't any on the map in Manchester, but I already knew there was the C and the R."

Nathan only started to run ultra-marathons a few years back, and has been raising lots of money through running impressive distances.

All of the proceeds raised from this run will go to the North West Air Ambulance, which is a special cause for him.

He said: "Fortunately we don't have terror attacks every day, but we do have car accidents and that's the kind of thing they help with."

What an amazing LAD.
