Explorer reveals the ‘worst-case scenario’ he fears most on the ‘world’s most dangerous’ expedition

An explorer travelling through the Congo Basin has revealed that he is prepared for the 'worst-case scenario' as people outline the many dangers he will face.

Ash Dykes is undertaking 'Project Six', which includes six expeditions in six different extreme environments as part of an ongoing adventure series.

The first of these is a 435-mile-long kayaking trip down the Sangha River in the Congo Basin, which has set social media buzzing with all the dangers of such a trip.

Ash is of course prepared for this, and shared how he hopes to navigate this journey.

"Luckily I've got experience so that really helps but I've mentally prepared by visualising the absolute worst case scenario," he told UNILAD.

"I've studied it. I've looked at other people who have been attacked, what they did and the different methods they used."

This is far from Ash's first rodeo when it comes to highly dangerous expeditions, having previously spent 352 days walking down the full length of China's Yangtze River.

But what are some of the dangers that he could face on this extreme trip?

"There's going to be parasites everywhere, there's diseases such as malaria and dengue," he said, explaining that they have medications such as antibiotics and malaria medicine.

"It's about getting on top of it before it's too late," he said.

And diseases are far from the only danger in the area, either.

There's also the small matter of the extremely dangerous animals that he could encounter there, such as hippos, which are one of the most deadly animals out there.

Ash is also travelling in an inflatable kayak, which would be like tearing a wet paper towel to an adult hippo.

"What if we see a hippo and it panics and attacks?" he said. "We're in an inflatable kayak and unable to get away quick enough."

He may also encounter gorillas and elephants, and while both are intelligent and often gentle animals, they're also both very big and powerful and more than capable of doing serious harm to a person if provoked or startled.

And it's not just the big and powerful animals that are a problem either, as there is also going to be a horde of tropical insects and spiders to contend with.

"it may be a parasitic worm that manages to get a hold of us," said Ash.

"It's hard, I'm trying my best to prepare," he said. "There are venomous snakes and scorpions, and if we do make a mistake, if we do get stung or bitten, we could pay the ultimate price.

"I'm more nervous about making a mistake and the jungle making us pay."

There are strategies to help stay safe though, including perhaps counterintuitively making your presence obvious, as this means that those big powerful creatures are less likely to get startled.

It's about 'making their presence heard so the big and small animals are a little bit more fearful', Ash explained.

The team will also have satellite communications with them to call for help to arrive in hours in an emergency.

"I think I'm going to fall in love with the Congo," said Ash. "I predict that when I come back, I'll have all these rich stories and experiences, and most likely, will want to come back in the future."
